A friend asked me, “People all know junk food is bad for the body and why do so many people love it, making it so popular?”

Well, this is a good question. For me, it is difficult to answer this question. Sometimes I also eat junk food, even if I know it is bad. What’ a pity, it tastes good. Now, I have to think about this question seriously and deeply. Maybe the reasons I will give you below are not correct, but they represent my thoughts, so here goes.

What are junk foods?

First of all, we need to understand and identify what junk foods are. Junk foods mean the food you eat has little to no nutritional value and most of them have bad ingredients and are high in calories. Most of them are served at fast food restaurants, such as chips, cookies, candy, sugary soft drinks, greasy burgers, french fries, soda beverages, ice cream and so on. You’ll find there are so many kinds of junks foods which have little to no nutritional ingredients and are rich in calories.

#1 Cheap

Obviously junk food is cheap. Even if you only have 1 dollar in your pocket, you can order something. If you have a few bucks, you can order a full meal. The cheap price, I think, is one of the most important factors making it so popular over the world. Fast food restaurants sell these cheap foods and spread them out.

Not only fast food restaurants but also grocery stores serve these junk foods, such as cheap snacks, high fat and high-sodium meals etc. On the contrary, healthier foods or organic foods tend to be more expensive, like fresh vegetables and fruits. For example, you need to pay 1 dollar for an orange, but less than 50 cents is enough for those bags or cups of instant ramen noodles. This means if you want to eat and drink healthier, you need to pay the price.

However, if you eat cheap junk foods for a long time, they are not cheap at all, because their negative impact on your health in the future may cost you much.

#2Easy to get.

Another reason is that they are easy to get. You can get them in convenience stores, vending machines and stores which don’t sell food but sell sodas and snacks near the cashiers. What’s more, these foods are easy to prepare. You can store them in your kitchen cabinets for a long time and open the doors of the cabinets to get them to eat as soon as possible.

Why are fast foods so popular? Because you can order a fast food meal and eat it in less than 2 minutes and you also can take it in your car to eat while driving. Fast foods can save your time but cannot save your life due to its junk features. Also dropped fries may accumulate in your car.

#3 Sweet, Fatty or Salty (Or All Three)

I have to admit that junks foods taste and smell good because of their delicate flavors. They taste sweet, fatty or salty (or all of them). I think people tend to choose delicate flavors other than healthier ingredients that taste not so good. Therefore, picky eaters vote for junk foods with their mouth. However, healthier foods taste a little bitter, so this turns some people off.

People tend to like textures made by various combinations of fat and sugar. Sugar makes food tastes sweet and fat makes food tastes creamy and smooth (like ice cream). Starchy things fried in hot oil can have a good crunch, such as corn chips and potato chips. This doesn’t mean healthy foods don’t have satisfying texture, but they need to take a little getting used to. Therefore, people tend to get something that is easy to get.

A Bad Habit

Once people get used to consume them, it becomes a habit, since they are easy to get, easy to make and taste good. It is a real problem. I am a type II diabetes due to over eating junk foods and drinking these junk beverages. And now, I  have a habit of drinking filtered water and organic fresh vegetables and fruits. Therefore, if the junk foods are your main foods every meal, you should pay attention and changing your food structure can make you far away from many diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure and so on.

Summary

Foods taste or smell good don’t mean they are healthy to eat. Just remember it and eat something organic and healthy.

I am 30-year-old mom. However, 4 months ago, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetics. For me, this result is really a nightmare. If you think only something with sweet taste contains sugars, you are wrong, because all carbs are sugar. As a diabetic, I must learn how to eat to control their intake. Or you’ll fail to control your blood sugar.

1. Reduce the intake of the carbs

This take effect immediately.

Now that a big enemy to diabetics is the excessive intake of carbs, we need to reduce the intake of the carbs. If we can keep a lower carb diet, it is easy to keep the blood sugar more stable. I highly recommend you to try the Paleo Diet or the Mediterranean Diet which you may hear much about them. Remember to talk to your physician, if you want to make some changes to your diet.

Many starchy foods we eat contain much more carbohydrates, like rice, grains, root vegetables and legumes. Therefore, their derivatives may contain even more carbohydrates, such as sushi, pasta, bread, mashed yams, French fries and even lentil soup. It is proven that a diabetic who keep a lower carb diet can make the blood sugar more stable. I have attested this. In the past 2 months, I ate a lower carb diet but ate more leafy greens, dark fruits, lean meats and nuts and I found that my blood sugar was very stable. So it is amazing just by changing the structure of the foods. I have controlled the intake of carbs and don’t feel hungry. I think I have a more healthy diet than before.

2. Spread Out the Carbs

This can take effect immediately.

Our body needs carbohydrates, but we cannot eat them more at a time, or your blood sugar will be higher. Why not eat them evenly throughout the day. For example, an entire apply may be not good for you, so why not eat it a half and eat another half a few hours later. You also can share an apple with your family. This can keep your blood sugar levels more steady. You may know big jumps and drops are dangerous in the long term and they may make you feel grumpy and hungry.

One reason caused Type II diabetics is that we sit for a long time without any exercise. Exercise is very important for diabetics, because it can lower blood sugar immediately. What’s more, it can make your body burn glucose much more efficiently. Stop sitting, just run, ride and enjoy all types of sports.

6. Do Some Light Exercise

Even some light exercise can help to lower the blood sugar level in a short time. After each meal, I often have a 20-minute walk and my blood sugar will drop by 40 points. Strength training like weight training may raise the blood sugar temporarily. However, it can help you build the kind of muscle which can burn and sorb glucose more efficiently.

Take a Supplement

For long term health benefits, many people choose to take supplements for the long term. Some supplements are also helpful to lower blood sugar quickly.

8. Cinnamon Pills

This can take effect within 1 hour.

Cinnamon is proven to be effective on reducing blood sugars. In order to take it enough and easily, take it in capsule form. Generally, 3,000mg at each meal is enough. However, it is not effective for post-menopausal women.

9. Chromium Picolinate

This can take effect within 1 hour.

At last, you can try these tips all together or stick to some of them. If someone on the internet tells you some foods or medicines can cure diabetes, don’t believe it. The only thing you have to do like me is to keep our blood sugar under control and we can live much longer and healthier than others.

The method of distillation is used to purify water. The purified water is called distilled water. Is distilled water safe to drink or is it healthy as same as other types of water? So the disadvantage is that if you keep drinking it, you may not intake enough these desirable minerals (like calcium, magnesium, iron). To this point, distilled water may be inferior to spring water or mineral water. On the other hand, if the water you drank before contains many heavy metals and toxic organic compounds, distilled water is safe enough even if healthy minerals are removed.

Generally, you can find some best distilled water brands at a grocery and you can choose one of them, because they are made from drinking water and it is safe to drink them. However, if distilled water made from the other source may not be safe to drink. For example, industrial distilled water is made from industrial source, which may contain many impurities.

Another factor may cause impure distilled water is the use of contaminated equipment. The contaminant attached to the equipment may pollute the steam and liquid distilled water again, making them unsafe to consume.

If you feel unsafe to buy bottled distilled water to drink, you can make it at home. The only appliance you need is a home water distiller. However, to make sure the water you distill is safe and clean enough, you should follow these useful tips:

  • Choose a distiller with a stainless steel chamber
  • The condenser tube must be made of copper
  • The collection container must be made of glass, so avoiding choosing one with a plastic bottle.
  • Clean the distiller on a regular basis

Plastic plays a very important role in our modern life and you’ll find much of our world is full plastic. Take plastic for example. In 1976, the average American only drank 1.6 gallons of bottled water per year. However, in 2008, this figure leaped to 28.3 gallons a year. Another fact is that about only 25% of these plastic bottles are recycled. Every year we need much landfill space to deal with these 75% plastic bottles. It is estimated that 1 ton of plastic needs 7 cubic yards of landfill space. Therefore, recycling plastic is necessary.

If you are a serious person, you’ve noticed the numbered recycling symbols on plastic items. Well, what do these numbers mean? They actually specify the type of plastic is used to make up this item. It also means how we can reuse it. For example, No.2 means the symbol for HDPE (high-density polyethylene). HDPE is durable and tough and it can be recycled to produce other products like plastic lumber.

Generally, there are a total of 7 different numbers which are used to identify the type of plastic resin. These numbers are useful, because these numbers are used to sort plastic during the recycling process.
